Tasmania's second largest city, Launceston, is a beautiful, laid-back city located in the scenic Tamar Valley. Like Hobart, Launceston is one of the oldest cities in Australia, established in 1805. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery feature Tasmania's history and zoological collections along with the city's premier art gallery which features 10 galleries and an interactive art experience for kids. The famed Tasmanian Devil comes to life at Trowunna Wildlife Park and nature lovers will be enriched by the many different Australian animals present.
Just 15 minutes from the city, take a cruise down the Tamar River, the lifeblood of the region. Here you will find the iconic Cataract Gorge. Take a chairlift across the South Esk River to experience this breathtaking area. If you are after a thrill, soar amongst the treetops and trek above the canopy in Hollybank Forest. Stretching from Binalong Bay in the south to Eddystone Point in the north, the Bay of Fires is an extensive picturesque bay featuring white beaches, blue water and orange-hued granite. It is a popular destination for camping, boating, wildlife watching and surfing. Southwest of Launceston, the mighty Cradle Mountain's ancient rainforest, wild landscapes and alpine heathlands are unmissable. Keen hikers can tackle the steep summit for clear views off Northern Tasmania. Get up and close with penguins in Low Head, located 40 minutes from Launceston. The little blue penguins emerge from the Bass Strait and waddle along the beach to nest in their burrows. East of Launceston, Freycinet National Park is home to two perfect bays: Wineglass Bay located on the east and Coles Bay on the south. Both will delight visitors with a mix of crystal clear waters, beaches and mountain land.
