Compare and Save on Car Hire in Kraków

One of the oldest cities in Poland, Kraków dates back to the 7th-century and has an exciting history which juxtaposes the vibrant, extraordinary metropolis it is today. Once the capital of the country, Kraków is without a doubt a unique and impressive city and the perfect starting point to begin your exploration of Poland. A great way to familiarise yourself with the city is to head to the highest point in the area, Wawel Hill. Here you will find Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral, the centre points around which the modern city has grown. The castle dates back to the 11th century and its current form is a result of additions and renovations undertaken during the 1500's. Regarded as one of the largest and best castles in Eastern Europe, the site is highly popular with travellers. The nearby cathedral, combined with splendid views of the city make a visit to this area a must for any visit to Kraków!

In the centre of the city, you can visit the largest medieval square in Europe, Rynek Glowny. Dating back to the 13th century, the square is lined with bars, cafes, restaurants and churches. Not far from the square you can also visit the Barbican, a circular fort from the 16th century, which was seen as an undefeatable defence structure for hundreds of years.

If you'd like to investigate the surrounding areas, head to Wieliczka, a town known for its sensational ancient salt mines, located just 17km from Kraków. Wieliczka is one of the original twelve UNESCO World Heritage Sites and certainly not to be missed. Other fantastic cities and towns in the region include Tarnów, Bielsko-Biala, and Nowy Sacz. You can visit Poland's largest and oldest brewery in Tychy, or journey to Czestochowa considered an extremely important pilgrimage destination in Central Europe. Whatever you decide, your options in and around Kraków are endless.

    Parking and Tolls in Kraków

As with many cities, parking in and around the city centre can be challenging. Additionally, Kraków employs a variety of driving zones which can be confusing for visitors. The area immediately around the Grand Square in the centre of the city is completely off limits as whatever parking is available is reserved for hotels. Parking meters will usually charge around 3 Polish Zlotys (approx. A$1) per hour. Take care to have small coins to pay meters as they will only accept exact change. Private car parks are also available throughout Kraków and public transportation is excellent. Some visitors select to park at hotels or one of the city's Park and Ride options and utilise the public transportation system when travelling into the city centre.

Toll roads do exist in Poland and prices may vary depending on the type of vehicle as well as the road on which you're travelling. Prices range from 3.50 Polish Zlotys to about 15 Polish Zlotys. Poland also has both open toll roads (pay only upon entering) and closed toll roads (take a ticket upon entering and pay based on the distance at the exit). Some toll roads accept credit cards, but it is advisable to carry small change to cover the cost of tolls.
